Wear Offsets (Haas ST-15Y)

From Make In Salford

Inserts and tools used in the lathe wear gradually and relatively predictably. In order to hold tight tolerances on the machine you can offset the tool a small amount to account for the minute wear of the inserts before it is time to replace them.

Wear offsets are always taken into account by the lathe controller, and it does not take into account the "compensation" setting in Fusion 360.

We'll only cover static turning tools here.

Turning Tool Offsets

Access the tool offsets page by pressing OFFSETS on the lathe control panel. Press F4 if required to switch to the tool offsets page.

You should only be adjusting the wear offsets by fractions of a millimeter. By the time you've reached even 0.5mm of wear offsets you should be considering rotating or replacing the insert rather than continuing to chase the insert around.

X-axis Wear Offset

Set this value in relation to the part diameter. If the part outer diameter is 0.02mm oversize you should enter -0.02mm into the wear offset field.
