SSW - Removing Parts From the Build Plate (Resin Printing)

From Make In Salford

During this process you will be working with 3D printing resin. Review the COSHH overview pages for these materials before starting work.

Cleanliness

Resin printing is messy - it is your responsibility to leave the resin printing area clean for the next person even if it wasn't you who made the mess. Make sure that all nitrile gloves are thrown away safely, surfaces are clean and free from resin residue, and tools are clean. Leaving hazardous resin on surfaces makes the space unsafe for other users.

Personal Protective Equipment

Nitrile Gloves
You must wear nitrile gloves when working with the printing resin.
Safety Glasses
You must safety glasses when working with the printing resin.

Specific risks you should be aware of

Hazardous Fumes
Only perform post-processing tasks in the Print Hive, this has built in ventilation.
Slipping with Scrapers and Tools
Make sure you know where a tool will go if it slips. Make sure that it will slip in a safe direction, in a controlled manner.

Removing parts from the build plate

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Remove the build plate from the machine and replace the cover or close the door.
  • Holding on to a handle or the mounting hardware of the build plate, rest the edge of the build plate on the table and use a scraper to get underneath the support material and separate it from the build plate.
  • You will need to put a reasonable amount of force into separating prints from the build plate, but be careful. Once you get underneath the print start wiggling the scraper back and forth.
  • Don't worry about scratching the build plate (within reason) but check you haven't created any burrs or sharp protrusions. Ask a member of technical staff for help removing these before putting the built plate back in the printer.
  • Clean the build plate with a paper towel and return it to the printer. Secure it in place using the fastener.
  • Clean the tools you have used with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol and paper towels and return them to the resin tools box.
  • Clean the work area with paper towel to remove any resin drips. You may find a small amount of isopropyl alcohol useful to remove residue.
  • Place all paper towels and gloves in the bin.
