COSHH - Screwfix - No Nonsense Contact Adhesive Spray

From Make In Salford

Contact adhesive is excellent at gluing flexible materials together, or to other hard surfaces. You could use it to glue vinyl to plywood, or carpet to a curved surface. It can be difficult to use though, so be sure you know exactly what you will be doing before you start work!

Usage Information

  • Make sure you are using this spray in the ventilated extraction area of the Maker Space, with the extraction vent turned on. Ask a member of technical staff if you are unsure how to proceed.
  • Cover surfaces you do not want to be covered in contact adhesive with masking paper or scrap cardboard.
  • Clean surfaces to be glued thoroughly, ensuring there is no grease, dust or oil on them. Make sure the surfaces are dry.
  • If you are unsure how the material will react to the glue do a test on an inconspicuous area. This glue contains acetone so it may dissolve certain plastics or paints.
  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses during application. Cover exposed skin to protect against overspray.
  • You may wish to use a roller to apply even pressure to the materials being glued.
  • After use, inver the can and spray into a paper towel to clean the nozzle. Dispose of the paper towel in general waste.

One-surface application

  • Spray one surface only from 6-8" (150-200mm) away.
  • Let the glue dry for approximately 30 seconds until it is tacky.
  • Press into position.

Two-surface application

  • Spray evenly onto both surfaces from 6-8" (150-200mm) away.
  • Let the glue dry for 2-5 minutes.
  • Position the two surfaces carefully, using wooden sticks or similar to prevent premature contact of the adhesive. Once the glue touches, it will immediately set into place and be very difficult to separate.
  • Press into position.

Temporary gluing

  • Spray one surface only from 6-8" (150-200mm) away.
  • Let the glue dry for 2-5 minutes.
  • Press into position.
