The VDI positions in the image above are the ones with the red protective plastic caps and can be loaded with either static turning tools, drills\/boring tools, or live tools like endmills and drills.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"hpb-block-front\"><div class=\"hpb-item\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/makeinsalford.com\/wiki\/wp-content\/plugins\/hazard-ppe-pictogram-block-v1.7.4\/assets\/pictograms\/general.png\" class=\"hpb-icon\" alt=\"General hazard pictogram\" \/><div class=\"hpb-text\"><div class=\"hpb-title\">Danger of machine damage<\/div><div class=\"hpb-desc\">Operate the tool turret only when there is sufficient clearance. Make sure that a moving tool cannot hit the chuck, the workpiece, or another part of the machine.<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"hpb-item\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/makeinsalford.com\/wiki\/wp-content\/plugins\/hazard-ppe-pictogram-block-v1.7.4\/assets\/pictograms\/general.png\" class=\"hpb-icon\" alt=\"General hazard pictogram\" \/><div class=\"hpb-text\"><div class=\"hpb-title\">Danger of damage to tool probe<\/div><div class=\"hpb-desc\">Do not operate the turret while the tool-probe arm is extended. Before you operate the turret, retract the tool-probe arm. This prevents accidental collisions.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selecting a tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To manually rotate the tool turret the machine must be in MDI (Manual Data Input) mode and the door must be closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Close the door.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure the machine is in a safe position for a tool change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press the <strong>MDI <\/strong>button to enter MDI mode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type the tool number, for example <strong>T6<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press the <strong>TURRET FWD<\/strong> or <strong>TURRET REV<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FWD vs REV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the CNC mill there is a difference between the functionality TURRET FWD and TURRET REV buttons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>FWD will rotate the turret <em>clockwise<\/em> to the requested position when looking from the chuck,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>REV will rotate it <em>anticlockwise<\/em> to the requested position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performing a position change with the wrong button will rotate the turret all the way around even if it&#8217;s the next turret pocket.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our machine has a 12-station hybrid turret with 6 Bolt-On-Tool (BOT) positions and 6 VDI-40 positions.
