This is a restricted use machine.
You must be specifically trained before using this equipment. Review the self-directed learning information on this page and book in for in-person training with a member of technical staff.
Missing Safety Information
This machine or process is currently missing safety information. Please make sure you check the risk assessments and datasheets in person - ask a member of technical staff if you are unsure.

The pillar drill is located in the Morson Engine Room and can be used for drilling wood, plastics, and metals.

Safety

  • Review the Safe System of Work for this machine before starting work.
  • You must not wear gloves when running this machine.
  • Long hair must be tied back securely.
  • Loose clothing must be tied back, loose long sleeves must be rolled up.
  • Make sure that all work is held securely by clamps or a vise before starting work.
  • Do not drill composites - you need to use the machines with dedicated dust extraction in the composites laboratory for this.

Usage Information

Setting the spindle speed

It is important to set the spindle speed correctly - the size of the bit you are using and the type of material you are drilling all affect the ideal speed. Cutting too slowly or too quickly can lead to poor cutting performance, and can even be dangerous.

The spindle speed is set using the pulleys in the top of the pillar drill head.

Workholding

It is crucially important to clamp your work effectively and safely before starting work. There are a few options you can use, and you can always ask for advice from a member of technical staff. Clamping your work not only prevents an injury, it will give you better accuracy and a nicer finish to your holes.

Using the keyless chuck

The keyless chuck has a capacity of 3 - 16mm - you shouldn't use a drill larger than this even if it will physically fit in the spindle. The keylesscan be removed from the spindle and replaced with a different type, such as a morse-taper shank drill bit.

Drilling to depth

A depth stop is available to assist with drilling to a certain depth. It isn't particularly accurate, so some care is required during use.

Troubleshooting

A few issues come up over and over - take a look here to see if your problem has a known solution.
