Haas WIPS Probe

From Make In Salford

Introduction

The WIPS Work Probe, or Renishaw Probe, is used to located work offsets and automatically probe feature geometry. In conjuction with Fusion 360 it can be used as part of an in-process inspection routine. It runs on batteries and uses infrared light to communicate with the CNC controller.

This tool is fragile, and is a piece of precision equipment. Special care must be taken to ensure that the probe body (which unlike the sensing tip is not touch sensitive) does not collide with any workpiece, fixture or machine part. Replacement Renishaw Probes cost approximately £3000 when the broken parts are traded in for a new one, and approximately £5500 for a completely new one.

Calling up the probe

The spindle must not be turned on while the probe is loaded. This will destroy the probe.

Switch to MDI mode and type T199 then press ATC FWD to load the work probe into the spindle.

Loading and unloading the probe

Whenever the tool probe is loaded into the machine it should be oriented to the Haas logo is towards the operator. This is to ensure the calibration of the tool is maintained. Always place the probe in the pocket allocated to Tool 199 - this has the special "Probe" type set so it will move slowly.

Changing the batteries

The probe uses 2x 1/2AA batteries. These are stored in the battery drawer.

When changing the batteries you must be very careful to not move the probe stem during the 30 seconds or so after the batteries have been inserted. Doing so may change the settings on the probe and cause it to stop working.
