We are creating a short series of self-directed CAM workshops that teach you how to program some simple parts ready for machining. The first workshops will cover setting up jobs for the Haas UMC-500 CNC mill.
It's expected you'll be comfortable using basic Fusion 360 commands - you can open and save files, move parts around and are familiar with the concept of "components" and using the browser tree. For people familiar with Solidworks it is possible to change the mouse commands in the preferences so the orbit and view commands work in a similar manner.
What do I need to do?
Read through the wiki page for each part and look over the drawing for each part. The drawing will give hints as to the best method to program and machine the parts, as well as the accuracy required for particular features.
Follow the instructions in the video tutorial for Mill 0-1 and program the part completely in Fusion 360. Once you've completed that get in touch with the Maker Space staff to book a slot on the machine - we'll check the program with you to catch any catastrophic errors and teach you how to load the program onto the machine and run it.
Once you've made all four parts you will be comfortable machining simple 3-axis parts, and performing secondary operations.
Is there a cost?
There are no material costs, and you get to take away the parts that you machine.
How much time will it take?
Expect to spend about an hour or two programming each of the four parts, and then the same running the parts on the machine. As you get more experienced the time it takes to program and run each job will decrease.
