Our Epilog Fusion Pro 48 is the largest of our four laser cutters. It has a 120 watt CO2 laser tube, and can accomodate sheet material up to 1200 mm x 900 mm.

CO2 lasers emit laser light in the infrared spectrum - it is invisible to the naked eye. This wavelength of light is suitable for cutting through organic materials that burn easily such as plywood, MDF, and acrylic.

Safety

  • Review the Safe System of Work document before starting work.
  • You must stay with the laser cutter at all times when it is cutting or engraving. There is a high risk of fire, therefore the process must be monitored. If you need to leave the laser you must pause the job.
  • You must turn on the fume extraction before you start cutting. The fumes produced by laser cutting are hazardous, and the smoke produced will set off the building's fire alarm.
  • Check the approved materials list before cutting. Some materials are unsafe to cut because of hazardous fumes or combustion byproducts. You must never cut PVC.

Training

We are happy for you to use this machine independently once you have received training, as long as you read and comply with the safety instructions above. If you feel you need one-to-one instruction or have a question that isn't covered here feel free to ask a member of technical staff.

Check out the pages for Epilog Dashboard and Adobe Illustrator for more information on preparing your files for laser cutting.

To check your knowledge before using the laser cutter you should complete this short quiz.

Starting and running a job on the laser cutter

Need a reminder on how to run a job? Just follow the steps here.

Connecting to the laser cutter

We use Epilog Job Manager and Epilog Dashboard to connect to the laser and send files for cutting and engraving. If it is the first time you've used the laser cutter on a particular PC you will need to add the laser cutter to your user profile.

If you wish to use your own laptop you can download and install the latest version of the Epilog Software Suite. The Maker Space staff cannot assist you with any issues to encounter when using the software on your own device.

Once you have completed these steps the laser is ready to receive files. You should prepare your files using Adobe Illustrator and then send them to the laser cutter using Epilog Dashboard.
