Step clamps, sometimes known as strap clamps, are used to hold workpieces to the table on the mill and in the pillar drill.

Be careful when opening the storage case - if you open it the wrong way up it all the component parts will fall out!

Usage Information

Prevent damage to the workpiece with a shim

A small aluminium shim between the workpiece and the clamp can help prevent damage to the work from clamping forces. Take a look in the drawers near the material rack for a supply of sacrificial stock suitable for this.

Use spacers when working near the middle of the threaded rod

It's very easy to screw a nut on too tightly near the end of the thread in the middle of the threaded rod. This can jam the nut on, which can be challenging to uncscrew. Prevent this by using spacers to keep the nut in the middle of the threaded section.

Make the toe take the load

The toe of the clamp, where the clamp meets your workpiece, should be ever so slightly below the heel. This ensures that there is clamping force on the work and you aren't spending a load of time making sure the serrated triangle block is extra secure instead of the workpiece.

Stack up parts when you need to

The kit of clamp parts is simply a set of building blocks. Mix and match them as you see fit to make your clamping solution work.
