Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE, is provided to keep you safe while working in the Maker Space.

Do I have to wear PPE?

You must wear PPE when a Risk Assessment, Safe System of Work, or Process Guide specifies it.

Provision and use of PPE is a legal requirement regulated by the Health & Safety Executive.

You are always welcomed to wear additional safety equipment wherever appropriate, but keep in mind certain processes specify that you cannot wear specific items of PPE - for example you must not wear gloves when working with most equipment with exposed spinning parts (like a drill press).

Where is PPE stored?

The PPE cupboard is on the left-hand side as you enter the Maker Space, next to the lockers.

You can usually find appropriate PPE near the work station that requires it. Otherwise, there is a specifically labelled storage cupboard in the entrance corridor that holds overflow stock and larger, bulkier items like welding helmets and fireproof overalls.

Do I have to ask?

No, help yourself to anything that you need to use. Please tell a member of technical staff if supplies are running low so we can order more.

There is no charge for PPE supplied by the Maker Space.

Can I bring my own?

Yes, but this isn't a requirement. You may use your own personally provided equipment as long as it is in date and complies with the standards as specified in the relevant risk assessments. You may be asked to prove this compliance.

Normally we would only expect you to bring your own if you already own it or there is a specific need - for example prescription safety glasses, your own welding helment, or fireproof overalls.

Hearing protection

I have noise-cancelling headphones/earphones, can I wear those instead of ear plugs?

In general, no. If the process or workspace requires hearing protection you must wear correctly fitted hearing protection.

If you wish you use noise-cancelling earphones they must be wireless (to prevent impingement on the sealing cushion of the ear cup) and be combined with over-ear hearing protection.

How do I use ear plugs?

There's a specific way to insert ear plugs - you should follow the instructions in the 3M usage guide. These instructions are also posted next to the ear plug dispenser in the Morson Engine Room.

Please remember to bin your ear plugs after use.
